If you have been out of the workforce for a few years, or are not 100% confident in putting together a great outfit, deciding what to wear for an interview can be daunting.  Personal Stylist Shannon Johnson believes everyone should have an interview-worthy professional outfit in their wardrobe – here are her top tips for getting it right:

1. The Fit

  • The easiest way to look good for an interview is to have well fitting clothes. I can’t stress how important this is.
  • Know that your fit is more than just your size. Clothing companies use average measurements to determine sizing and fit to try to cater to many people. Look at how the clothes you try on make your body look, and be flexible when it comes to size. In one store you may be a medium, but in another you may be a small.

2. Neutral Colours

  • An interview is not the time to experiment with the latest trendy colours – keep it neutral.  If you’re opting for a suit, choose black, navy, or charcoal, and lighten up the look with a white or light coloured shirt or blouse underneath your jacket.
  • Stay away from bold prints or crazy colours

3. Keep it Chic and Simple

  • Stick to simple styles. If you are torn on whether or not to wear something, always opt for the more conservative option.
  • Don’t forget to accessorise! Ties and accessories are a great way to show interest and add a touch of your personal style.
  • Stay conservative when it comes to shoes.  For ladies, a closed toe, low rise pump or flat shoe is the best choice.
