Career Tips

Write the Perfect CV – Part 1 of 3

A step-by-step guide to craft the perfect CV. Here's everything you'll need.

  • Font style should be easy to read
  • Use dot points for clarity, but just the one type
  • Bold for headings is easier to read than underline
  • Don’t be afraid to use professional colours, borders or page break lines to help you stand out from the crowd

CONTACT DETAILS

  • Centre contact details at the top of the page. Include name, mobile and email. Nothing else is required or expected.
  • No photos
  • Make sure your name and phone/email contacts are on each page just in case the pages get separated after being printed out in hard copy
  • Only use professional-sounding email addresses

VALUE PROPOSITION, CAREER SUMMARY, PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

  • You have 30 seconds to entice your reader and convince them to put you on the “YES” pile
  • Sell yourself fast, succinctly and with gusto
  • Employers want to know what you are going to do for them – how are you different to the rest?
  • Deliver the same proposition during your networking efforts and during any interview. More Reading: https://hbr.org/2011/11/a-value-proposition-for-your-c#
